Community Health and Wellbeing Worker Project - Bringing Brazil to Selby!
Community Health and Wellbeing Workers play an essential role, supporting households to access health services and community support, helping to address rising inequalities in health and social care, and identifying unmet needs in the community.
Each Community Health and Wellbeing Worker has a defined number of households and this project is currently working on two areas of Selby identified as needing this support. Workers visit people in their homes to provide health and wellbeing advice and connect them to NHS and community-based services and activities.
Based on an existing health model in Brazil, this exciting project is being delivered by Selby Town Primary Care Network in partnership with Up for Yorkshire, funded by the Integrated Care Board.

Rise2Thrive and Trailblazer
Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Mayoral Combined Authority through the Economic Inactivity Trailblazer, Rise2Thrive and Trailblazer are two complementary employability support programmes delivered through a unified, collaborative partnership.
These partnership programmes are designed for adults in York and North Yorkshire who are economically inactive and facing barriers to engaging with employment and training opportunities, or those in employment and facing significant barriers to career progression.
Through the programmes, individuals receive tailored 1-2-1 advice, mentoring and employability support, and have access to specific interventions designed to help tackle their barriers.
This combination of support is designed to improve people’s health, confidence, skills, circumstances and ultimately their employability, moving them closer towards a position where they are thriving in their life and in work.
Rise2Thrive focuses on supporting those both inside and outside of work, and the Trailblazer exclusively offers enhanced support to key cohorts of economically inactive people.
Rise2Thrive and Trailblazer run from May 2025 through until March 2026.

Problem Solving
Our Zero Selby
Our Zero Selby is a vibrant community-driven project dedicated to making Selby greener, healthier, and more connected. We believe in practical initiatives that bring real benefits to everyone, guided by what you want to see in our town. From Repair Cafes to tree planting and promoting active travel through the Selby Big Bike Revival, our efforts are all about reducing carbon emissions and creating community spirit.
Two years ago, we asked for your input on creating a more sustainable Selby. Through extensive consultations and workshops, we engaged with over 500 local residents and nearly 50 stakeholders. Your feedback has shaped our projects, ensuring they reflect your needs and aspirations.
Our Repair Cafes help residents save money and reduce waste by learning to fix their belongings. Our tree planting initiatives beautify our town and contribute to cleaner air, creating a healthier environment for all. The Selby Big Bike Revival promotes active travel, encouraging people to explore our beautiful local area on two wheels, which helps reduce carbon emissions and improve health. These activities create a strong, supportive community where everyone can thrive.

Big Local
Selby is one of 150 areas in England chosen to deliver Big Local – a community led, 10 year Big Lottery funded programme which helps residents create lasting change through an investment of at least £1 million.
Big Local puts the local community, and most importantly residents, firmly in the driving seat allowing them to identify local needs, take action and make a lasting, positive difference.

Community Fridge
The Community Fridge project directly works to reducing food waste and empower our community.
The Selby Community Fridge is a space where everyone can share surplus food, including donations from local food businesses, producers, households and gardens.
The Selby Community Fridge can be accessed by anyone and everyone who wants to share food, needs food, is keen to volunteer or just get involved with food, environment or related activities. The project is run under a national Community Fridge movement called ‘Hubbub’, which you can find out more about here: Community Fridges | Hubbub Foundation

Well-Come
Our Well-Come project is specifically aimed at reducing isolation, loneliness and supporting good mental health. A series of Community pop-ups take wellbeing advice and support directly into neighbourhoods that, due to their rurality, lack of existing services, and /or public transport, present barriers to residents accessing support and advice.
As well as being out and about, we also offer a weekly opportunity to pop in and see us:

Our Space
In 2019 Selby Big Local bought a derelict shop in the heart of the Big Local area, to transform into a vibrant, community-owned and community-led space. This followed four years of talking to residents to understand what issues are most important to them. Finding a place for residents to come together and make “community happen” was a priority.

SWIFT
At Up for Yorkshire, we believe in the power of people, real stories, and community-led change. That’s why we’re proud to be co-delivering the SWIFT Project, a three-year initiative launched in April 2025 to help migrant communities across North Yorkshire feel safe, supported, and at home.
SWIFT, funded by the National Lottery through North Yorkshire Council, offers free, confidential, and impartial advice tailored to the needs of migrants, whether they’re navigating local systems, accessing essential services, or simply finding their place in a new community.
Through a dedicated helpline and outreach sessions across the county, the project provides professional casework and practical support when it’s needed most. SWIFT is more than advice, it’s about building confidence, connection, and community.
Working in partnership with North Yorkshire Council, Citizens Advice and Law Centre, the project creates real opportunities for people to thrive. From peer-led groups and language support, to community events and volunteering, SWIFT is here to help people settle, grow, and feel truly valued.

Shop For The Future
In some towns, charity shops are seen as a sign of decline. In Selby, we see them as a sign of potential.
Shop for the Future is a bold new initiative from Up for Yorkshire, using the power of second-hand retail to breathe life into Selby’s high street. With support from the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and Mayor David Skaith, we’ve launched a trail map featuring the 14 unique charity shops of Selby, each raising funds for vital causes and adding colour, character, and community spirit to our town centre.
These shops are more than places to browse, they’re anchors of local identity and opportunity. But they face challenges too, especially around unsuitable donations that create waste and cost time and money to manage.
That’s why Shop for the Future is tackling the issue head-on. The project supports shops to sort and dispose of waste sustainably, runs a public campaign to educate donors on what not to give, and brings together residents, creatives, and organisations to celebrate second-hand culture and explore upcycling and reuse.
The project began with a Trail Map and will culminate in a spectacular Sustainable Fashion Show at Selby Abbey on Wednesday 12th November 2025, a celebration of style, sustainability, and high street pride.
