Our Zero Selby - Our community, our climate, our chance

Our Zero Selby is a resident-led project, with the belief that all communities can benefit from the transition to net zero. It also believes that this is most likely to happen when communities are provided with the opportunity to lead the transition themselves. We are working with the Selby community to ensure residents are well represented, have agency and have a voice in how the transition to Our Zero Selby will impact their town.

Whether a resident, school, business or community group, Our Zero Selby ensures there is some way our community can have their say.

During the initial phase of the project, residents decided upon 25 projects they believe will improve Selby and provide benefits for all its residents, across five themes:

Travel,
Food,
Nature,
Buildings,
Waste.

Our current projects include:

  • Repair Café: A place to share skills and repair textiles, electrical, and digital items in a welcoming environment. We’re always looking for skilled volunteers to help with repairs, getting the word out and generating interest.

  • Nature projects: Including native and fruit tree planting, spreading wildflowers and creating havens for local wildlife. Embrace hands-on action and help shape a greener, more sustainable Selby!

  • Active Travel: Active travel encompasses both daily commuting and recreational activities, offering health benefits while reducing carbon emissions. To tackle this we are taking part in The Big Bike Revival; helping adults to begin or return to cycling through free guided bike rides and bike fixing events.

  • Composting: We are exploring small-scale household food collections in Selby, then transporting food waste to local growers who can use it to make compost, as well as working with Compost-It, a CIC who is doing just this in Leeds!

“Our Zero Selby is inviting our community to be part of something bigger, to work together to shape and achieve a fair and positive future”
