Building a Brighter Future for Brayton’s Young People
Our journey to create a thriving youth space in Brayton began in Summer 2022. Concerned about the increasing number of young people gathering in the local park, we launched ‘YO8’, a free, open-access drop-in session in partnership with Flying Futures. Named by the young people themselves, YO8 has become a cornerstone of the community, attracting over 60 young people each week to enjoy activities, learn new skills, and simply relax.
The positive impact of YO8 has been undeniable. Not only has it provided a safe and welcoming space for young people, but it has also led to a significant reduction in anti-social behaviour. By offering a place where they feel valued and supported, we’ve helped to foster a stronger sense of community among our young people.
Thanks to the support of local volunteers, Flying Futures youth organisation, the Police Crime Commissioner’s Fund, and Brayton Parish Council, we’ve established a weekly youth group to build positive relationships with young people in the area. This initiative has been incredibly successful, with a noticeable decline in vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
A collaborative effort involving Up For Yorkshire, the Police, North Yorkshire Council, Brayton Parish Council, and youth services has been instrumental in addressing the need for youth provision locally. We continue to work closely with young people and the wider community at every stage of this project.
We’re excited to announce that we’re now working with partners on an ambitious project to transform unused changing rooms into a larger space for young people. We’ve submitted funding applications to cover the building work and employ a dedicated youth worker.
Thanks to a small grant, we’ve already started renovating unused changing rooms to create a larger, more suitable space for the youth club. However, we need your support to bring this vision to life. Please help us raise vital funds through our crowdfunder campaign to create a fantastic facility for the young people of Brayton, Selby, and the surrounding area.
