Selby Park and Recreation Road Allotments

The result of a great collaboration for the whole community to enjoy!

Community Growing Space

A community garden or allotment brings such a wide range of benefits, including improving the environment for the wider public, connecting people with each other, improved mental and physical health opportunities, developing sustainable and beautiful outside spaces, as well as providing fresh food to enjoy and share!

For the community to enjoy

Recreation Road Allotments

Recreation Road Allotments is an independent allotment and community gardening space, committed to serving the social, emotional and health needs of Selby and the wider community. Run by a local Community Interest Company, the allotments work to provide a connection to nature through growing food, learning about the environment, and maintaining biodiversity.

We were keen to support this fantastic community project and are therefore leasing a large patch of allotments and using them to deliver invaluable educational and wellbeing opportunities.

Selby Park

The park project was established in partnership with Selby Hands of Hope, with a small team of volunteer gardeners, looking to support the local community, improve outside space, and find a sense of purpose for themselves.

Selby Hands of Hope, Up For Yorkshire, and project participants have worked in partnership with the Council, Selby Community Furniture Store, and Selby Garden Centre to make this project the success that it is today.

The team have also taken on caring for the Sensory Garden and will be working closely with the council throughout the exciting regeneration project of the Railway Station.

The Handy Gardeners

The team call themselves ‘The Handy Gardeners’ and are now a key member of the Sustainability Partnership. They have already started to develop other green spaces in Selby Town, continuing to work closely with NYC, Selby Civic Society, Big Local, Groundworks and Project Wild.

The recent pandemic has shown us just how crucial accessible outdoor space is for the wider community. This project works to support ongoing efforts from both the statutory and voluntary sectors, as well as providing fantastic volunteering opportunities.
